CNC Turning

NTS ME has seven lathes, five of which have CNC controls plus two manual lathes. The Hankook lathes can hold up to 5M length between head/tail stocks and between 5,000 and 8,000 kg respectively.

Metalworking lathes are a large class of lathes designed for precisely machining relatively hard materials. These rigid machine tools remove material from a rotating work-piece via the (typically linear) movements of various cutting tools, such as tool bits and drill bits. These machines have been greatly modified for various applications however a familiarity with the basics shows the similarities between types. These machines consist of, at the least, a headstock, bed, carriage and tailstock. The better machines are solidly constructed with broad bearing surfaces (slides or ways) for stability and manufactured with great precision. This helps ensure the components manufactured on the machines can meet the required tolerances and repeatability.

CNC Milling

Milling machines are used for the shaping of metal and other solid materials. Work-piece and cutter movement are precisely controlled to less than 0.001 inches (.025 millimeters), usually by means of precision ground slides and lead-screws or analogous technology. Milling machines may be manually operated, mechanically automated, or digitally automated via computer numerical control (CNC). Milling machines can perform a vast number of operations, some very complex, such as slot and keyway cutting, planning, drilling, die sinking, rebating, routing, etc. Cutting fluid is often pumped to the cutting site to cool and lubricate the cut, and to sluice away the resulting swarf. The most advanced CNC milling-machines, the 5-axis machines , add two more axes in addition to the three normal axes (XYZ). Horizontal milling machines also have a C or Q axis, allowing the horizontally mounted work-piece to be rotated, essentially allowing asymmetric and turning.
